Users
with an IBM
ThinkPad
may experience problems communicating with the eBeam hardware
during software installation.
The
IBM ThinkPad comes factory configured with the Infrared
(IR) communications port enabled and the standard
serial communications port disabled. To allow
the eBeam hardware to communicate with the PC, the
serial port needs to be enabled, and the IR port
needs to be disabled or redirected to
another COM port.
To
reconfigure your ThinkPad, you will use the ThinkPad
Features software. If you do not have this software,
please contact your IBM representative.
For
instructions to resolve this problem, please view
the ThinkPad reconfiguration instructions below or
download the ThinkPad
Reconfiguration Instructions document (PDF format).
Please
Note:
The information provided below is made available for
the convenience of our users with an IBM ThinkPad.
If you have any questions beyond the scope of this
HelpNote, please refer to your ThinkPad documentation
and/or contact IBM Technical Support for further assistance.
Reconfiguring
Infrared & Serial Ports
AS YOU RECONFIGURE YOUR SYSTEM, YOU MAY RECEIVE
PROMPTS TO SHUT DOWN AND RESTART. DO NOT RESTART YOUR
SYSTEM UNTIL YOU ARE INSTRUCTED TO DO SO.
- Select
Start>Settings>Control Panel.
- Double
click on System.
- Select
the Device Manager tab.
- Click
on the "+" next to Ports (LPT &
COM).
- Select
COM1 and select the Remove button. When
the Confirm Device Removal dialog window
appears, select the OK button
to confirm the removal. If COM2, COM3, and COM4
exist, remove them as well using the same procedure.
- Some
of the newer model ThinkPads have an IBM Digital
Signal Processor that, among other things, controls
the modem and serial ports. If you see this entry
in your Device Manager list, double-click
on it. If you do not see an IBM Digital
Signal Processor entry, skip to Step 9.
- Select
the ThinkPad Digital Signal Processor.
- Select
the Remove button and when prompted, select
the OK button to confirm the removal.
- Close
the Device Manager window.
- Close
the Control Panel window.
- Select
the ThinkPad Features or ThinkPad Configuration
icon located in the ThinkPad
folder.
- An
image of the ThinkPad will be displayed. Located
around the image are icon buttons that will help
you configure your system.
- If
you hold your mouse pointer over any of the icons
in this configuration screen the button will be
identified at the bottom in the status window. Locate
the Infrared button on the left-hand side
of the configuration screen and click it once.
-
Change Infrared from "Enable" to "Disable"
and click the OK button.
- Locate
the Serial Port icon on the left-hand side and click
it once.
- Select
Serial Port "Enable" and ensure that the
COM port setting is COM1. Click the OK
button.
Please note that COM 1 and 3 are assigned IRQ 4
and COM 2 and 4 are assigned IRQ 3. An IRQ can be
shared only in Windows® 95 and Windows 98.
If you wish to enable the Infrared port and need
to free up an IRQ, please read the ThinkPad Modem
Reconfiguration section below.
- Even
though you have enabled the serial port and disabled
the Infrared port, some ThinkPad models need to
have the power management for these devices configured
as well.
- Select
the Power Management icon. A flyout suite
of three icons will appear.
- Select
the Device Power Management icon. Select
the ON radio button for the Serial port selection.
- Select
the OFF radio button for the Infrared port
selection.
- Click
OK to save the changes.
- Shutdown
and restart the computer. Windows should "find"
and reconfigure the new hardware.
- Install
the eBeam software.
ThinkPad
Modem Reconfiguration
The ThinkPad modem is supported by a digital signal
processor (DSP) called IBM Advanced Communications
Processor. The ThinkPad modem software usually
uses two interrupt requests (IRQs) to handle the DSP
interrupt and the modem interrupt. However, by sharing
an IRQ between these two devices, you can free one
IRQ so that you can use it for another device.
Note:
An IRQ can be shared only in Windows 95 and
Windows 98.
To
share an IRQ, perform the following steps:
- After
rebooting, click on Start>Programs>ThinkPad>ThinkPad
Configuration.
- Click
on the internal modem icon.
- Click
on the Device Manager button.
- Double-click
on IBM Digital Signal Processor.
- Double-click
on ThinkPad Digital Signal Processor.
- Click
on Disable in this hardware profile, then
click on the OK button.
- Double-click
on ThinkPad Digital Signal Processor.
- Click
on the Resources tab.
- Click
on the Automatic Settings and remove the
check mark.
- Select
Basic Configuration 0005. You see the following
in the list: I/O 130-13F I/O 28F-2FF IRQ 3 DMA 0
- Double-click
on Direct Memory Access.
- Select
"07" for Value and click on the OK
button. You see the following in the list: I/O 130-13F
I/O 28F-2FF IRQ 3 DMA 7
- Shutdown
and restart your computer.
