HyperTerminal is a utility that can help test if any data is being received from the Capture Bar connected to the COM port.

HyperTerminal is located in the Windows>Accessories>Communications folder.

If you do not have a HyperTerminal folder, the following is the procedure for installing HyperTerminal.

  1. Select Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. The Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog window will appear.
  2. Select the Windows Setup tab. The HyperTerminal utility is located in Communications section.
  3. To add HyperTerminal, either double click on Communications, or select Communications and then the Details button. The Communications dialog window will appear.
  4. Select the HyperTerminal utility by clicking on the check box.
  5. Select the OK button.
  6. Select the OK button on the Add/Remove Properties dialog window.
The HyperTerminal utility will begin installing. (Depending on how your system is set up, you may be prompted for a Windows
    ® diskette or CD.)
  7. After the installation, close the Control Panel window.
You will now use the HyperTerminal utility to test serial communications. To run the HyperTerminal utility:
  1. For Windows 95 and Windows 98, select Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > HyperTerminal. For Windows NT, select Start > Programs > Accessories > HyperTerminal.
  2. Select the Hypertrm.exe icon. The Connection Description dialog window appears.
  3. Enter a session name in the Name field (e.g., eBeam) and click the OK button. The session's Phone Number dialog window appears.
  4. Select the Connect using: dropdown list box.
  5. From the list of items, select the "Direct to COM #" selection where # is the eBeam COM port.
WARNING: Do NOT experiment with selecting the COM port. You may interfere with other devices functioning properly.
  6. Click the OK button. The COM# Properties dialog window appears.
  7. Modify the settings (i.e., Bits per second = 9600, Data bits = 8, Parity = None, Stop bits = 1, Flow control = XON/XOFF).
  8. Click the OK button. The HyperTerminal dialog box will appear.
  9. Touch anywhere on the whiteboard with the marker. If the COM port, cable, and eBeam pods are communicating successfully, extraneous characters will appear in your HyperTerminal window.

If there is a problem with communications, you will not receive any data in your HyperTerminal window. Make certain to touch the whiteboard in multiple locations using more than one marker and sleeve.
