USB

At this time, eBeam will work on a USB port providing you have an optional third party adapter that makes your PC's USB port appear as a serial port.

Currently the Entrega USB to Serial DB9 Converter (a product of Entrega Technologies, Inc.) has been tested with eBeam.

General USB Troubleshooting Steps
Windows 98 is Plug and Play. On some systems, after the installation of a serial device's software, when the Operating System reboots, it may see the device, but not know what it is because the device's driver has not yet loaded. The OS then ignores the device, so that even after the driver does load, the device may still not be found.

If your system is USB compliant, and experiencing the above problem, try the following suggestions:

  1. Plug the device directly into a wall outlet, not into a power strip.
  2. Remove any security dongles from the computer, if attached.
  3. Remove any switch boxes or extension cables between the device and the computer.
  4. Confirm that you are using the cables that came with the device and that the connections are tight and secure.
  5. Try removing other USB devices, restart the computer and try the device again.
  6. Shut the computer completely off, disconnect the cable from the device, start the computer back up, and then reconnect the device so that Windows 98 Plug and Play can attempt to find it.

If the problem is still present, the driver for the device may need to be updated:

  1. Right mouse click on the My Computer icon on the main Windows desktop.
  2. Select Properties > System Properties > Device Manager tab.
  3. Look for the device group it belongs to (it might be listed under Other or Unknown Devices).
  4. Click the plus sign in front of the device group, then double click on the device.
  5. Select the Driver tab.
  6. Click the Update Driver button.
  7. Follow the prompts to update the device driver.
  8. Close the Device Manager window and test the device again.

If the problem is still present, a resource conflict may be present:

  1. From the Windows Start button, select Settings > Control Panel > System > Device Manager tab.
  2. Click on Universal serial bus controller. Make sure that there are no exclamations points displayed and that it says that it is working correctly.
